It’s a bit of overkill. Or lack of creativity. Whichever comes first.

This is not what the world needs.
Do they really want to possibly destroy Earth?

It seems like I can never catch a break with Google’s Gmail Notifier.
Last week, Google announced that they were now offering the ability to force an account to use https at all times for greater security. Being the security freak that I am, I naturally enabled this. Of course, something broke as a result.
Gmail Notifier suddenly stopped alerting me as to when new mail would arrive (because of the switch from http to https I would assume). So after some googling, I found this short how-to and Gmail Notifier is back in action. Until Google releases an official update (which will probably be exactly what this article outlines), this will fill in wonderfully.

The Spread Firefox site also has a page of other peculiar world records for your viewing pleasure.
With the release of Firefox 3, the Mozilla Foundation decided to try and create break the Guinness World Record for most downloads in 24 hours. I can’t blame them, Firefox is still trying to obtain a large market share in the internet browsing world, this is great publicity for them. Starting at 2:16PM EST yesterday, the timer started, and I downloaded it last night somewhere around 7PM, so I guess I was downloader 2,000,000 or something, who knows.
Earlier today though, I discovered that Mozilla had been publicly tracking downloads across the world, with detailed numbers for each country. After browsing the map, I noticed that quite a few countries (Chad, Turkmenistan, and Somalia, just to name some) had download numbers in single or double digits only. After some very slow mousing, I stopped on French Guiana and was surprised to see that their download total was at 0. What gives?
Don’t worry, I’m not picking on French Guiana, I also could have chosen from North Korea, Guinea-bissau, South Georgia And The South Sandwich Islands, Timor-leste, Western Sahara, or Svalbard And Jan Mayen, whatever the hell that is.
Annoying Gmail Notifier Beep
Tons of people use Gmail for their everyday email nowadays. A couple years ago, Google released a tiny piece of software for Windows that would notify users whenever new email arrived.
When this is used in Windows Vista, (I don’t know if it works this way in XP or not, its been a while since I installed it there) it gives a loud beep when a new message arrives, causing me to crap myself. I did some searching on the internet and found out how to disable this irritating and shrill noise. The steps can be found below:
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager.
2. Under the View option at the top, select “Devices By Connection”
making sure that “Show Hidden Devices” is checked.
3. On the list that appears there is something called “Beep”. Right click on this and select Properties.
4. Click on the “Driver” tab, click Stop next to Status, then next to Startup, select the Type as Disabled.
5. Click Ok and enjoy peacefulness whenever an email arrives.
Windows Vista Image Resizer
Back when I had XP, I used to use the right-click image resizer powertoy on an almost daily basis. Sadly, with the advent of Vista, that powertoy disappeared…
Until today, when I found this great little piece of software that does everything I need (and a little more.)
